O Fundo das Nações Unidas para a Infância, Unicef, alertou que quase 27 milhões de pessoas não têm acesso à água potável em países que enfrentam ou estão em risco de fome.
O relatório divulgado esta quarta-feira afirmou que falta d’água, saneamento básico e práticas de higiene inadequados e epidemias representam uma ameaça adicional a crianças desnutridas no Iêmen, no norte da Nigéria, na Somália e no Sudão do Sul.
Círculo vicioso
O diretor dos Programas de Emergência do Unicef, Manuel Fontaine, disse que “a combinação de desnutrição, água poluída e falta de saneamento cria um círculo vicioso onde muitas crianças não conseguem se recuperar”.
Segundo Fontaine, “a água poluída pode causar desnutrição ou piorar ainda mais o problema. Não importa a quantidade de comida consumida por uma criança desnutrida, ela não vai melhorar se a água que ela bebe não for limpa”.
O Unicef informou que no norte da Nigéria, 75% da infraestrutura de água e saneamento nas áreas afetadas por conflitos estão danificadas ou destruídas, deixando 3,8 milhões de pessoas sem acesso à água potável.
Na Somália, o número de pessoas que precisam de acesso à água, saneamento e higiene deve passar de 3,3 milhões para 4,5 milhões nas próximas semanas. Isso representa um terço da população do país.
Cólera
No Sudão do Sul, 5,1 milhões não têm acesso à água potável, saneamento e higiene. Metade dos locais de fornecimento de água no país está danificado ou destruído. Além disso, a epidemia de cólera em junho de 2016 gerou mais de cinco mil casos e mais de 100 mortes.
No Iêmen, o conflito e o deslocamento em massa da população deixaram, pelo menos 14,5 milhões de pessoas sem acesso à água limpa e saneamento básico.
Uma epidemia de cólera em outubro do ano passado e um surto de diarreia aguda continua se espalhando com mais de 22,5 mil casos suspeitos e 106 mortos.
Quase 2 milhões de crianças correm o risco de contrair diarreia, que mesmo antes do conflito, já era a segunda maior causa de morte entre crianças menores de cinco anos.
Violência
Apesar da violência nos quatro países, o Unicef conseguiu fornecer água potável para mais de 660 mil pessoas e tratar 170 mil crianças com desnutrição aguda no norte da Nigéria.
Na Somália, a agência forneceu água potável a 1,5 milhão de pessoas e realizou uma campanha de vacinação contra o cólera.
No Sudão do Sul, o Unicef está cooperando com o Programa Mundial de Alimentos, PMA, para levar alimentos, remédios, água e serviços de saneamento para crianças que vivem em áreas remotas.
No Iêmen, a agência da ONU trabalha com parceiros para manter clínicas de saúde funcionando e fornecendo apoio a serviços de saneamento e abastecimento de água para 4,5 milhões de pessoas.
